Why Did Jesus Leave His Followers Behind?

Jesus ascending into heaven.

(Editorial note: This post was adapted from the sermon manuscript and transcript written and preached by Pastor Chris on Sunday, May 17, 2026 with the assistance of AI.)

After Jesus rose from the dead, it might seem like the next step would be obvious. He should stay. He should rule visibly. He should fix the world right away. If Jesus is Lord, why leave His followers behind in a world still full of suffering, sin, evil, confusion, and death?

That question matters because Christians still live in that same space. Jesus has risen, but the world is not yet fully healed. Jesus is King, but we still face grief, temptation, anxiety, and pain. Jesus is with His people, but we do not see Him standing in front of us the way His first disciples did.

So why did Jesus leave?

Why Did Jesus Leave His Followers Behind: Because his work was done.

In John 17, Jesus prays to the Father before His arrest and crucifixion. He says that the hour has come and that He has finished the work the Father gave Him to do. Jesus came to reveal the Father, give eternal life, die for the world, rise again, and open the way back to God.

His leaving was not a sign of failure. Jesus did not leave because His mission fell apart. He left because His earthly work was complete. Through His death, resurrection, and return to the Father, Jesus was shown to be the Son of God and the rightful King.

But Jesus did not leave His people alone.

Jesus Left His Followers in the Father’s Care

Before Jesus left, He prayed for His followers. He knew they would remain in the world. He knew they would face trouble. He knew they would need protection, unity, and strength. So He entrusted them to the Father’s care.

This means Christians are not abandoned people. The absence of Jesus in bodily form does not mean the absence of God’s love, care, or protection. Jesus’ followers are held by the Father, even while they live in the difficult space between Jesus’ resurrection and His return.

Jesus Left His Followers With a Mission

In Acts 1, the disciples ask Jesus if He is about to restore the kingdom. They want to know if the waiting is over. Jesus redirects them. The timing belongs to the Father, but the mission belongs to them.

Jesus tells His followers they will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes, and they will be His witnesses to the ends of the earth.

That is a major part of why Jesus left His followers behind. They were not supposed to stand still, staring into the sky. They were sent into the world to bear witness to the story of Jesus.

That calling continues today. Following Jesus means trusting God, living by the power of the Holy Spirit, and pointing others toward Christ through words, actions, endurance, love, and faith.

What Are Christians Supposed To Do Until Jesus Returns?

First Peter reminds believers that life in this middle space is not easy. Christians are called to humble themselves under God’s mighty hand, cast their anxieties on Him, stay alert, resist evil, and stand firm in faith.

Jesus never promised that following Him would remove every struggle. But He did promise that His people would not be left alone. We have the Father’s care, the Spirit’s power, the family of believers, and the mission of Jesus.

So why did Jesus leave His followers behind?

He left because His work was complete. He left because He returned to the Father. He left because He would send the Holy Spirit. He left because His followers had a mission. And He left with the promise that He will come again.

Jesus had a plan.

And we are still part of it.
